What is Diabetes

Nowadays diabetes has become more common. Obesity, aging, lifestyles, and environmental factors are the main cause of this disease. It also can be inherited [You are more likely to develop it if a parent or sibling has it.]

It is a disease in which glucose, or sugar levels, are above normal in the blood. Most of the food that we eat is turned into glucose which our bodies use for energy.

An organ, the pancreas, which lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin that helps glucose get into the cells of our bodies. If you have this diseas, your body doesn’t make enough insulin. In this case, glucose stays in the blood and does not reach the cells of your body. So, having too much sugar in the blood of your body leads to many health issues.

As there is no such permanent cure. But certain medicines and physical activities can help to control it.

The main cause of this type of diabetes is an autoimmune reaction. This reaction destroys the cells of the pancreas that make insulin. Some people can have genes that can be easily passed from parents to their children and make them type 1 diabetic.  Type 1 diabetic patients need to take insulin injections to control it.

Can a life of a diabetic patient be normal?

The answer is ‘yes’. A diabetic patient can live a long, healthy life. For a normal life, a diabetic patient should see the doctor regularly, take all of the medications, and should do exercise.

Overall

It has been found that patients with type 2 have a longer life-expectancy than patients with type 1 , and the overall life expectancy of diabetics is equal to that of the non-diabetic population. There is a marginal increase of 0.6 years in life expectancy for male diabetics compared to their counterparts in the non-diabetic group across the full examined period. This difference in life expectancy is seen in male diabetics. There was a difference of 1.3 years in life expectancy between diabetic women. Women had a significantly higher incidence of diabetes than males did. This increase in life expectancy might be explained by better management of diabetes; however, additional research is required to verify this theory.
