Romelu Lukaku missed three golden chances to keep Belgium in the World Cup 2022, which led to the team’s elimination. The match ended in a scoreless draw, which allowed Croatia to advance as the runner-up in Group F behind Morocco.

Belgium began the competition in third place, so they were well aware that only a win would ensure their progression. However, despite being ranked second in the FIFA rankings and having finished third at the Russia 2018 tournament, Belgium were unable to force a win and did not advance out of their group for the first time since 1998.

Ivan Perisic took a shot right after the kickoff, but it was wide of the goal. Despite this setback, Belgium was able to produce two opportunities of their own, but Belgium’s already slim prospects of winning were almost dashed within 10 seconds. Before Dries Mertens blasted over Kevin De Bruyne’s ball, Dominik Livakovic raced off his line to prevent Yannick Carrasco’s shot. Before that, Dominik Livakovic had blocked the shot of Yannick Carrasco.
